Overview

Our immune system keeps us healthy. It protects us from disease and helps us bounce back from infection. It keeps us safe. The human immune system is remarkable and resilient, and essential to life. We also have an emotional immune system, which also keeps us safe. Grown through childhood, and maintained in adult experience, our emotional immune system guides how we interact, how we trust, how we risk. It is, in other words, fundamental to our identities and experiences of the world.

Without it, we’d be lost. However, it oftentimes falls out of sync with reality. We constantly need to pay attention to it and recalibrate it so that it doesn’t trip us up. If we stick only to our old patterns of relating and managing risk, we’ll soon become stale, unable to keep up with the pace and demands of today’s world and constantly drawn back into the past. The model of Immunity to Change provides a model and a tool for maintaining a healthy, change-ready emotional and behavioural system.
